The world-wide flash mob “Prove that now you look better than 10 years ago” was still trending, when social network picked up a new hot topic. “Compare the style of Lynn Yaeger and Melania Trump”. Thousands of people, who have nothing to do with the fashion industry and yesterday did not know who Lynn Yaeger is, express “expert opinions” about her personal style ‒ as loud as they can.

True, most of these armchair experts of style still do not know who Lynn Yaeger is. For them, it’s just “some kind of scary lady”, “clown”, “freak”, and “stylish nonsense”. They are experiencing how this strange, clumsy, bad woman, whose appearance does not please their eyes at all, decides to criticize the magical, beautiful and flawless Melania Trump? How can she accuse of tastelessness this beauty, which always looks great?! And in general, how this ugly old woman can accuse of bad taste anyone? She looks like a laughingstock. So what if she is the contributing fashion editor of American Vogue?

In fact, Lynn Yaeger is one of the most fashionable observers in the US and in the world. Before Vogue, she has been writing for the famous New York edition The Village Voice for 30 years! In addition to Vogue, Lynn also regularly collaborates with the New York Times, The New Yorker, Style Magazine, and a number of other famous publications. The level of materials in some of them is such that most of the “homemade stylists”, who criticize Lynn Yaeger would not be able to write, but even to read it.

Lynn is now in the list of the 500 most influential people in the global fashion industry. Marc Jacobs calls her his muse. Young designers would sell their souls to see Lynn Yaeger at their show because her word for fashion business professionals is more influential than thousands of likes in social networks.

Why does Lynn Yaeger criticize Melania Trump’s style? Because, after all, this is her job. As a fashionable commentator, she comments on the style of famous people, and certainly, the US First Lady is one of them. There is nothing new in this. The style of the previous First Ladies was also discussed, and every appearance in public of the members of the Royal Family of Great Britain and many other celebrities becomes a subject of consideration. And not always reviews on their outfits are sweet and approving.

Why the society, including some American media and users of social networks, began actively discuss the style and appearance of Lynn Yaeger herself in response? And so sarcastically, so viciously that films about ruthless school bullying come to life before your eyes? This is because in the United States there is a certain social conflict around the person of the current President. Some citizens hate him, others, on the contrary, love and accept any criticism of him or any of his relatives as a personal insult. And they give such a crushing rebuff that, it seems that their further depends on how well they defend Melania Trump’s style and how disgustingly they will humiliate Lynn Yaeger.

But excuse me, how does the further fate of the ordinary Ukrainian depend on the humiliation of Lynn Yaeger? Americans can still be understood, this topic hurts them, but should it concern us? Don’t we have enough problems? Don’t we have anyone to criticize for style and not only? But here we have: only in the past week, I came across lively discussions on the style and personality of Lynn Yaeger in Ukrainian Facebook several times. And what is most interesting, these discussions are often initiated not even by women, but by men and those, who have never been noticed in excessive interest in fashion and style before. And she is accused of not only bad taste, but she is already overweight, with a clumsy figure, ugly features, and age. If ageism and body-shaming could be turned into gold ‒ we would swim in luxury!

Well, everyone has the right to their own tastes and preferences. If a man likes how Melania Trump looks like and doesn’t like how Lynn Yaeger looks like, this is not surprising.

However, Lynn Yaeger does not simply dress this way that most men do not like her look. Everything is much more serious here: she was clearly not intended to please them. She pointedly did not seek this. Approval of ordinary men on the street ‒ this was the last thing she thought about when choosing an outfit. She took into account anything: the play of textures and proportions, symbols, allusions and reminiscences, an unmistakable and unique personal style, her own personality and childhood memories ‒ and she did not seek the attention and compassion of alien, unfamiliar men. She needs them just like a  moose needs a hat rack. And that is what angered people more!

This is not just a conflict of stylу preferences! This is a conflict of worldviews! Here we are not talking about the length or style of the skirt; here it is about the basic fundamentals of the female appearance or even, if you like, lifestyle. A woman can build her image in such a way that it is as attractive as possible for most men. Struggling to emphasize feminine features, accentuate the waist and chest, lengthen legs with high heels, decorate hair with seductive curls, face ‒ with seductive makeup, and sometimes ‒ more serious interference. This way ‒ maximally presenting oneself and extending it for the longest possible time ‒ women were going through the centuries. For centuries, men have been accustomed to thinking that women are dressing exclusively for them. And it was something like that.

But in the modern world, there are other ways. Clothing, shoes, hairstyles can be chosen by a woman not only for male pleasure but also for many other reasons. For self-expression, making some kind of creative image. For the declaration of certain social or political ideas. Identification with a specific group or subculture. All in all, just for one’s own comfort and convenience. And if a certain women’s dress is not loved by men, this does not mean that the one who wears it did not cope with the task and did not dress well. It is possible that she did not have the task to please men. And instead, she coped well with the desirable.

The critics of Lynn Yaeger insist that a woman, who does not know how to dress, should not criticize others and hand out style tips. She is supposedly the tailor, who walks in a tattered coat. They are just scared to accept the fact that she has deliberately torn her coat and very skillfully. She knows how to dress great, she just dresses for other purposes, not for those that are ordinary and understandable. And she gives advice, not at the level of “how to dress to attract male attention”.

You may not like the style of Lynn Yaeger. But she herself chooses those who she wants to like her and those, who don’t. As, indeed, any other woman, and Melania Trump in particular. And if you do not like Lynn Yaeger, maybe your dissatisfaction would be fine for her.

  1. Nothing to do? If she hadn’t open her mouth to spit on Melania, we would have never opened ours! She’s a cunt!

  2. Vogue Editor Lynn Yaeger….Things that make you go hmmm ?. Her styling choices are very personal and very awful , you don’t need to be a fashionista to know when personal style is more a reflection of personal rejections and biases towards others.

  3. elmer a goetz on

Like the man said… * I wouldn’t fucc her with your dick….she is definitely ugly. Her face would make a freight train take a dirt road.

  4. All u have to is say the village voice and u know she is a whack job who wouldnt know style. Her makeup and style would not get her a job anywhere. When she walks into andtore they escort her out cause she looks homeless . Cause she work.for a socialist rag for 30 years, growing a cult following of others who cant dress dies jot mean anything to ordinary ppl. Who cares what this she demon thinks and Mrs trump should not either . Mrs trump haa class and style and grace unlike this unkempt peice of work

  5. You don’t have to be a fashion expert to notice that there’s something wrong with this Lynn Y….whatever.

Do we want a world like this?

The Andy Warhol of fashion. Someday that torn coat and those comfortable shoes will be worth millions at auction.

    • Doubt it! I lived in NYC all my life. I have always been immersed and embraced the amazing fashion influence of our city. I feel I am quite a fashionista due to all the amazing influence of living in the fashion capital of the world for over 25 years. Lived it studied it and painted the town red with my sashay swag. But I disagree with this article defending LYNN. One can be creative, but Classic with style and one can go extreme and break barriers with fashion, but not use thier Position or experience for bad personal fashion and tasteless comments. To further my point why FLOTUS, why now say something very negative about a truly stunning and fashionable woman and never before. This wasn’t professional it was personal and vindictive. I mean Michelle Obama style was terrible and tacky. ( I am not saying this to be negative towards black women, as I think most black women are fierce with style, just not Michelle)

The fashionistas and media have not given FLOTUS a chance to be the muse she could be. She is perfect and so fierce! Furthermore, Lynn is not an idol. I lived in NYC al my life and never head of her! Last, I think she devalued herself with this personal comment and chooses to critiques Others people style to hide her own personal misery.

I just hope people start understanding that you cannot create unity with more hate and negative energy. Her message should have been positive as many young woman around the world from other countries admire the First Lady’s journey as dream come true. A true Cinderella
Story ( Newsflash, it’s ok to want to be desired by men) The beautiful journey from Modeling, To living in the big city and now doing great things for this administration in the White House. Unfortunately the feminist heathens , such as LYNN cannot act what they preach! The aren’t for empowerment and influence of all women. It’s a crock of Shit!

You certainly cannot create empowerment and unity with a clown suit on! ? #whostheorangecheetohnow !

  7. What biased shitty article. She can bully and put down Melania, but nobody can dislike her style. Typical liberal projection. Get a life.

The whole point of the fashion industry is to help the majority of ordinary women look attractive so they can gain a suitable mate.
This woman lacks all of the qualities that fit this mandate.
That said, Melania Trump’s Sense of poise, grace and style is undeniable.
As a man, I know which one of these women I’d make the effort to walk across the room to talk too..
And I know the vast majority of men would agree with me.

  9. how Lynn Yaeger always criticizes M for the appearance, the wrong selection of bags and shoes. how can some people loudly and everywhere call her style icon where? in a psychiatry textbook, chapter schizophrenia? that’s all you need to know about the liberal press and modern fashion, again, the totalitarian suppression of free speech. how can this woman talk about her beauty in public and no one will answer this is not at all like that, this is especially understandable for Ukrainians. and it’s not even because some people can loudly and everywhere call it style icon where? in a psychiatry textbook, chapter schizophrenia? this is all you need to know about the liberal press and modern fashion, the simplest thing is to read what she wrote about the past first lady. but it’s not about Lynn. the point is how liberal totalitarianism with its totalitarian suppression of freedom of speech. the next stage is familiar to all Ukrainians, the Biden, against which even a criminal case was opened by the main and only contender from the democrats for the president! and that no one sees what happened to him? no one notices that he simply cannot connect a sentence of 4-5 words. he publicly cannot remember that the woman standing with him is his wife, he cannot remember her name. unfortunately, happens to everyone, but a party in which at least 2 times more people than the population of Ukraine cannot find a replacement? or doesn’t want to. and the one who speaks publicly will be immediately expelled from the party, fired from his job, etc.

Personally, I think Lynn Yaeger has some rather deep seeded problems that cannot be fixed by making bully comments about her. What I find telling is her need to criticize others when how the world perceives her is not very flattering. She may be “fashion knowledgeable”; but that doesn’t make her “fashion god”!!! To be perfectly honest, at my age, I would not want this caricature of a person near me. But, then again, I don’t have to so why do I even care.

  11. The author doth protest too much. Then is sexist on top of it. The First Lady isn’t dressing “for men” Yager’s “style” is for attention only. The First Lady is elegant, classic. The fashion industry has lost such a valuable opportunity, yet the First Lady rises above it.

  12. I am a fan of Science Fiction and this analytical text of yours is, by far, one that I would recommend for some kind of universal maximum award, in a mixture of mad monologues with deep repressions and a total absence of reality, considering that 80% of the world does not the minimum for the fashion industry or even know that it exists.

  13. There is something wrong with this sentence:
“Before Vogue, she has been writing for the famous New York edition The Village Voice for 30 years!”

  14. One day… maybe after the collapse of our modern society, and the subsequent end of non essential jobs, the fashion industry will realize that most people do not consider them important. They are viewed as a bunch of snobs producing mostly useless garbs and spending huge money for nothing, a group of lunatics who give primary importance to a handbag, in contrast with normal human beings who love nature and animals. A pack of people without a conscience, who do not hesitate to use fur and feathers on starving models, who push ordinary people to consume more and more clothes, thus depleting resources and creating much pollution everywhere. Magazines aiming at young women are filled with their nonsense, instead of scientific subjects that would open their minds to the mysteries of the world.
