Did you know that in Italy on New Year’s Eve you definitely need to wear new red lingerie? No matter what it will be, comfortable cotton boxers or frank and seductive lace lingerie, so long as it is something red and brand new, never dressed. It is believed that this is what guarantees all sorts of benefits in the coming year. Not surprisingly, on New Year’s Eve, stores throughout Italy “make a plan” for selling red underwear for the whole year.
But in Argentina, in New Year’s Eve, those, who hope to meet their love next year wear pink underwear. And in Bolivia, even though it is bordering Argentina, the tradition is quite different: they wear yellow panties for the New Year to ensure their success in business and financial benefits. In Mexico, to improve your condition there is a green color of attire and New Year’s decorations.
In the Philippines, a happy fate is associated with the circle, so Filipino women wear a dress in peas on New Year’s Eve and dressing up tablecloths in peas. The more circles ‒ the more happiness and well-being will bring the New Year.
In Colombia, people who want to travel more and discover the world roam the streets with empty suitcases on New Year’s Eve. It is believed that this ritual will bring to life many exciting new trips.
And in many countries, and Italy in particular, there is a tradition for the New Year to get rid of old things. Clothes, household appliances, even furniture that is no longer needed, some crush and throw away with delight not just from the windows. Others find the strength to politely bring it to the trash bin. But both do it with one purpose ‒ to clear space for something new. Leave all outdated, spent and just boring ‒ last year. So that the New Year brings something new, better, more advanced and fashionable into life.
All these are funny traditions, and they are hardly worth taking seriously. We are all here ‒ adults and we are well aware that neither pink pants will provide us with happy love, nor red ones guarantee success and inspiration. New impressions and new financial achievements do not depend on whether we are walking on December 31 with an empty suitcase or throwing old rubbish out of the house. Rather, it can be affected by the fact that we throw away the antediluvian nonsense from our head.
As life shows, there are all sorts of stereotypes, outdated prejudices and other preconceptions in the head of the ordinary citizen. But since it is impossible to embrace the immense, especially in the framework of the author’s column, we will consider only the sphere of fashion and appearance.
Therefore, on this New Year’s Eve, I propose to say goodbye forever to the stereotype that women must meet certain standards and who do not respond ‒ are defective and secondary. The length of the legs, the volume of the hips or the shape of the nose is not an indicator of the quality of a woman and does in no way can indicate her attractiveness, style, taste or good disposition. You can be happy with any eyebrows and any stage of cellulite, it is proved empirically.
I also ask you to get rid of the idea that someone can wear something, and for someone it is forbidden. Fashion trends exist for everyone, they are not designed exclusively for women of the same body type, same age or skin color. Weight, height, year of birth ‒ all these parameters should interest the doctors, and then only if the woman is sick. Fashion stores and clothing manufacturers should not set limits on the age or weight of the clients, they should strive to ensure that the client leaves them happy. Regardless of anthropometric data and dates in the passport.
I also advise you to send to the dump the idea that some colors do not suit someone or, God forbid, that someone cannot wear some colors. Everything fits everyone, for every woman, there is her red, her blue, her green. Every color, even black has shades, you just have to find your own.
I also propose to discard all kinds of typification from the head, all these color types, archetypes, and any other “types”. All these schematic distributions of women in “winter” and “summer”, “dramatists” and “romantics”, “creators” and “wise women” can help professionals in discussing what they want to create. But to an ordinary woman, who is looking for her style, they can fool and confuse her even more.
There are typical images, but no typical women. We are all different and it is very hard to standardize and simplify us. Moreover, we are different every day, today we want to be wise, tomorrow ‒ playful, today we prefer to seduce, tomorrow ‒ to teach. We can do everything, and we can everything that is not prohibited by applicable law. And in the field of clothing and style, nothing is prohibited to us, as far as I know.
Therefore, we will leave all the prejudices and old-regime restrictions in the past year. Let next year nothing restrain your imagination, your stylish searches and new fashionable solutions! Happy New Year!
